Now here is a holiday I can really get behind! Did you KNOW that February 22nd (today!) is National Margarita Day? Forget about Family Day! If you are a fellow Federal Public Servant who left for work early yesterday morning while your fellow family members were still sleeping or lounging around in their PJ’s - feel better! It’s National Margarita Day! Start searchin’ for that…lost shaker of salt.
I could probably fake my way through a whole margarita post, but in this case I am just going to direct you to someone who actually knows what they’re doing. Head on over to the Art of Drink Blog for this post on Margaritas. What I liked most about this post was how Darcy started it off by talking about how the Margarita has become a “giant, fluorescent green, sugar laced, culinary nightmare”. So well said. The real deal only has about three or so ingredients (tequila, triple sec/cointreau and lime juice - I add a wee bit of sugar to mine) and it’s all stuff you have around the house…no booze in the blender. On his site, you will find a few recipe options, as well as a link to the 100 calorie Margarita (yesss! yesss!).
I’m not entirely sure if this is just a south of the border thing for our American neighbours, but I am totally willing to take up the cause of changing the Margarita’s image here in Canada, to something that’s a bit more true to the original cocktail. Ottawa is Margaritaville today!
Oh and - don’t forget to scroll down to where I posted a link to Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville. Just don’t start on that song too early, or you will be singing it all day. Some people claim that there’s a wo-man to blame…but I know…
Jesus God. It happened to me.
Yes, this really is my t-shirt!
